Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa for Miss Paris Group

Kylie’s first endorsement in Japan

As part of her prize for winning Miss International 2016, Kylie Verzosa is now the latest endorser of Miss Paris Group – a Japan-based beauty company engaged in spa services, weight loss and more.

And Kylie’s part in the promotion of the company (which is a major sponsor of Miss International) has given its new posters a refreshing lift that should widen the appeal even more.

Check out the Miss Paris Group website to know more about the organization. A trip to Japan would not be complete without a visit to one of their several branches in Tokyo.🙂

4 Pics, 5 Words | Still under negotiations but wanna guess?

This is a strong possibility if negotiations prosper

Could 2018 be the right year?

On this day – 24 hours before Christmas – allow me to suck you in to something that has reached my radar just a couple of nights back. The basic details are quite clear but only the end statements can be blogged in order to avoid any premature conclusions.

My attempt at 4 Pics, 5 Words (not 4 Pics, 1 Word) above is a no-brainer. And you can easily give a final answer in just five seconds flat.

Nothing is final. Yet. The weight of the whole matter is still up in the air. An offer has been initiated, with a couple of important conditions thrown in this early.

The important thing to ask is: will the talks prosper? Preferred local organizers have already been identified, and the undesirables filtered out. If the 65th Miss Universe took ages to finalize, I’m sure this one will also drag like a prisoner’s ball-and-chain. But if it does come to fruition, how will you react to the possibility?

Time for discussions to begin. Oh, and before you comment, care to give your 5 Words to answer the 4 pics above?🙂

4 Pics, 5 Words Part 2 | Now I would be genuinely thrilled if this one happens

If this holds water soon, then I would really be genuinely thrilled

Unlike my previous blog post, the initiative on holding Miss International 2017 in Manila is something that started from small talks that allegedly originated from the country’s Department of Tourism. And 15 hours before Christmas, I am telling you now that if everything goes beyond loose lip service and a Philippine delegation flies to Tokyo, Japan to make formal negotiations, then I would be genuinely thrilled for the dream event becoming a reality.

The now extinct Miss Young International competition has been held in the Philippines twice and consecutively from 1980 to 1981. Wouldn’t it just be more exciting to see the surviving Japan-based pageant (that has honored the Filipina six times now) to finally land on our shores? And with Kylie Verzosa as the reigning titleholder, crowning her successor here would be the real icing on the cake.

Start your comments now, dear readers. And Merry Christmas as well! My December 25 feature will be truly image-filled!😉

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE ! MARIA MIKA MAXINE MEDINA Miss Universe Philippines 2016 Raymond Saldaña Photography HMUA : Jp Surco of David’s Salon Styled by : Henry Henry e Henry Designer : Cherry Samuya Veric

Christmas is always a time for joy & togetherness for everyone. And for Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina, nothing would make her more merry than to spend December 25 with all her three siblings complete. But then again, she will need to wait till January to arrive before the entire cast will be present – her parents Max and Marife, sister Ferica and brothers Mathew and Marx (photo below). This is the 3rd Christmas that a member is always missing.

Next month, Christmas will be extended for our bet in the 65th Miss Universe as the family support will be full and unconditional. And this should make Maxine more motivated and high-spirited once she starts representing the country in the most beautiful event in the Philippines come 2017.

Merry Christmas to one and all from Miss Universe Philippines 2016!

In the meantime, I am extending to you Maxine’s warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas to all the readers of normannorman.com.😀

All I want for Christmas is you, my dear Readers!

Miss United Continents 2016 Jeslyn Santos and I

There are always two groups to blogging in terms of readership – the people I write about and the people who read what I write about. Both sides are automatically part of my captive audience in this site. And I always give equal importance, no matter what.

But for my Christmas blog post, let me focus on you, dear readers. The ones who stood by me, who will never allow a day pass without checking out what’s being offered and who consider normannorman.com as some sort of a hang-out place – be it for sharing good comments, throwing potshots at others or just adding up more substance to what I have already written about.

You stayed with me during my good days, my not-so-good days, my lazy days, my days of personal struggle and pain, days when I just want to leave everything behind but thought against it whenever the cloud of doubts would clear up and I can start seeing things clearly behind my thick glasses.

I work hard every single day. I wake up early and sleep late. I don’t mind messing up my body clock. For as long as I can still humanly deliver, I keep on churning out whatever screenshots from my brain can inspire me to just start typing on the keys of my laptop or tablet.

For 2016, here are memories of my blog coverages in photos. I never imagined accumulating so many images that a close friend once told me that my iPhone looks more like a public property more than a personal unit. 90% of it is devoted to blogging and whatever is left get to be used up by selfies and family activities.

Part 6 of my selfies/groupies for 2016

I would’ve never lasted this long without you, dear readers. After all, what’s the use of daily blogging without readers on the other end to catch my thoughts? You always keep me focused. There may be times when it was just physically impossible for me to sustain the regularity of things. But through it all – drunk, sober, nice, feisty, tired, drained or just hopelessly in love – I’m still standing.

Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach and Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina

During Bb. Pilipinas 2016

Yes, they’ve got each other’s back for sure – Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach and Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina. And for solid reasons at that:
1) Maxine succeeded Queen P so the latter will support the success of the former at great lengths to continue the winning tradition of the Philippines in Miss Universe.
2) Pia is the reigning titleholder, while Maxine is the host delegate. They both represent the Philippines so joining hands to make the 65th Miss Universe successful is incumbent upon the two of them.
3) Pia and Maxine come from the same beauty camp and were trained by the same professionals at Aces & Queens. There will always be an instinctive support coming from each other when it matters most.

But are we looking at a potential back-to-back victory in the 65th Miss Universe? That would be a wonderful Christmas gift for the Philippines if ever. But with us being the host, I don’t see it coming just yet. There needs to be a very convincing reason why Maxine should be the next, in the same vein that Dennise Quiñones won the same title in her own backyard more than fifteen years ago today.

What are your deep thoughts on this subject matter, dear readers?

Tansu Sıla Çakır will represent Turkey in the 65th Miss Universe

Beginning today, December 26, I will share with you my 65th Miss Universe Watch series (hopefully on a daily basis).

For starters, let us give the spotlight to the representative of Turkey – 21 year-old Tansu Sila Çakir – whose beauty is now being talked about in pageant circles as one of the pre-arrival favorites and for good reasons at that.

Here is a brief excerpt on the 411 of the Istanbul-born stunner from this source:

Tansu Sila Çakir is a Nutrition and Dietetics student at the Bilgi University Health Sciences Faculty. By her first social media photos during the pageant process, she was catching the attention of many followers. She loves to be in shape, and as she emphasizes that people should eat balanced. She has the same name of Turkish first Prime Minister…”

Here is a video of Tansu Sila Çakir’s TV interview on Turkish TV. You won’t understand a word but just looking at her beautiful face is already mesmerizing.

I totally agree with the growing hype on this Turkish lass. She may only measure 172 cm. in height, but she stands alone as arrestingly tall. And she has such captivating features that are oh-so hard to miss.

Does she measure up to your preferences, dear readers?🙂

Jean is Taizhou-bound for Miss City Tourism 2017

Jean Lacsina Tumang by Andy Cayna of Sash Factor

Jean Lacsina Tumang was crowned Miss Model of the Universe Philippines 2016 during Miss Tourism Philippines earlier this year. But due to some unexpected turn of events regarding the international competition where she is supposed to compete in, Miss Model of the Universe is not pushing through.

And so, her mentor John dela Vega was fortunate enough to get the franchise for Miss City Tourism 2017 which will happen in Taizhou, China from December 27, 2016-January 19, 2017. He appointed Jean to be the Philippine representative to the same.

And tomorrow, Jean is scheduled to fly to the host city with the aim of becoming the winner of Miss City Tourism. Our best wishes to this tall and lovely lass who deserves to wear the Philippine sash abroad.🙂

Good luck in Miss City Tourism, Jean!

Alena Spodynyuk of Ukraine in her National Costume for the 65th Miss Universe

When the 65th Miss Universe officially unreels in Manila next month, all eyes will definitely gaze in the direction of Miss Ukraine Alena Spodynyuk who is being primed as one of the top picks among pageant sites and message boards to be a major contender for the crown. And just by looking at her photographs and video (below), I can’t help but react on the affirmative.

Here is a 5’9″ beauty from Crimea with moviestar looks and an overall classic face that can easily be scouted for a potential career in Hollywood as the next James Bond girl or leading lady in a blockbuster action flick. And why not? She used to be a professional handball player prior to winning the national title, and is used to the rough-and-tumble of sports and the like.

Alena Spodynyuk is definitely someone to look out for in the 65th Miss Universe. Here is an excerpt from the report made by Kyiv Post about her:

Spodynyuk says she has never taken part in beauty contests before– for the past five years she has been a professional handball player. She is currently preparing to enter the National University of Culture and Arts in Kyiv, and dreams of becoming a journalist.

It took her two months to prepare for the Miss Ukraine Universe beauty contest, and she had to overcome illness during the final, having to take to the stage despite having a temperature.

“The hardest part of the contest for me was theevening dress round, when the top five were selected at the end,” Spodynyuk recalls.

Below is a recent photoshoot of Alena as Miss Universe Ukraine 2016.

Alena wants to become the first Ukrainian to win Miss Universe, an honor she wants to achieve after being named as the youngest national winner ever to represent the country in the biggest beauty event for 2017.

“I know what I need to work on, and what needs to be improved,” she said in an interview with the Kyiv Post.

Your thoughts about Alena, dear readers?🙂

The 11th Mister International will finally happen in Bangkok, Thailand on February 13, 2017

Miguel Mari Guia will represent the Philippines (Photo by Joy Arguil)

It should have pushed through this year in Bangkok, but with the untimely death of the Beloved King of Thailand, everything had to be set aside first to give way to a period of mourning for the Thais.

Finally, Mister International – the 11th Edition – will stream live from the Asiatique Riverfront of the Chao Phya hours before Valentine’s Day next year or February 13, 2017 to be exact. And Miguel Mari Guia (left photo) will represent the Philippines and attempt a 2nd victory of the country in the male competition.

Paolo Ballesteros during the MMFF Parade

You can’t let this movie pass. Go watch it now!

The movie has also conquered India!

As of today, the movie “Die Beautiful” is in a tight contest for the #1 spot in terms of box-office receipts in the ongoing Metro Manila Film Festival. But with the positive word-of-mouth and glowing praises about it, I wouldn’t be surprised if it will end up as the official top grosser in the annual filmfest. Despite the R-13 rating, people are coming in droves just to watch the Paolo Ballesteros flick. And you should, too. Besides, it has pageantry written all over, aside from the fact that Pia Wurtzbach photos of my coverage partner Joy Arguil were actually used in one scene.

There are so many quotable quotes to laugh or be sad/pensive about. And instead of me posting them, I will allow you – my dear readers – to reply with your favorite line from the Jun Robles Rana-directed film.

After “Die Beautiful” conquered Tokyo, Japan and Kerala, India with awards to be proud of, I’m pretty sure the MMFF Awards Night will award it with more.

65th Miss Universe Watch | Isabel Dalley of Jamaica

At 6’2″, Isabel is the tallest candidate in the 65th Miss Universe

There are two sides to being the tallest candidate in a big beauty pageant, bragging rights being the first. On the other end, being so amazonian in height can make one stick out in an awkward manner in group photos if not yet fully trained to project a queenly and dignified bearing. After all, standing 6’2″ is not considered normal by pageant standards.

18 year-old Isabel Dalley of Jamaica admits to being a tomboy. But after winning Miss Universe Jamaica 2016 last September, it has suddenly pushed her to the limelight in a way that required shedding off all those engine-changing and football-playing hobbies in exchange for gowns, heels and a whole lot more of the glamorous stuff. This future Marine Biologist, though, is ready for the challenge. She will arrive in Manila next month a completely transformed young woman.

Here is part of the 411 on Isabel as reported by the Jamaica Gleaner:

“At six feet two inches tall, Isabel Dalley stood out from the other competitors to cop the coveted title of Miss Universe Jamaica. The 18-year-old is not your average beauty queen. As a matter of fact, she is what most considers a tomboy.

Born in Fairfield and raised in Montego Bay, Dalley enjoyed a well-rounded childhood impacted largely by four persons. “When I was younger, I lived with my grandparents, who were always there to guide me. My grandmother enriched my love for cooking and baking. Every evening when I went home, she was always making something delicious in the kitchen, from chocolate cake to fresh bread and cookies. And my grandfather would try to get me to learn golf because he said I had the right build,” Dally told Flair. She added, “He would introduce me to other cultures via movies from all the around the world.”

The exotic beauty of Isabel is complimented by an uber statuesque height

Isabel on the cover of Panache

True, Isabel spent part of her teenage years being bullied for her height. “I can remember always trying to bend in pictures to be the same height as my friends, and continuously slouching to seem shorter.” But now, she is fully aware of her advantages and is only too happy not having to wear platforms just to add up to her vertical plus.

Miss France in the 65th Miss Universe is Iris Mittenaere

Iris Mittenaere of France is another beauty who will celebrate her birthday in Manila, Philippines next month for the 65th Miss Universe. She is still 23 now, but will turn 24 on January 25 right smack into the rehearsals and pre-homestretch activities of the pageant.

Last December 19, this brunette from Nord-Pas-de-Calais observed her first year as Miss France. She stands 172cm tall and is in her fifth year of dental surgery. She proclaimed herself a passionate advocate in the “fight for the education of girls”.

Does France have a winner in Iris?

Is Iris a va-va-voom for you?

While it took her winning of Miss France to put together her divorced parents (of 20 years) to pool their support behind her victory, Iris hopes that the bonds will become even stronger if she wins the biggest beauty title of Miss Universe.

Do you feel strongly for Miss France, dear readers?

Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina on the cover of Xpedition Middle East

Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina has scored a first – both in her modeling and pageantry career. She is now the first Asian to grace the cover of high-end Xpedition Middle East Magazine. Her beauty blazes on the cover of the latest issue wearing a divine creation by Designer Frederick Peralta and photographed by Raymond Saldana.

Here is the Press Release courtesy of my good friend Editor in Chief Josh Mangila:

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. December 27, 2016 – XPEDITION Middle East magazine, the Middle East’s only home-grown luxury travel and lifestyle magazine targeted to affluent Emiratis, Expats and Arabs in the region with more than 12,000 VVIP subscribers circulated in all leading 5 star hotels, fine dining restaurants, tourism board offices, high end travel agencies, first class and business class lounges, airlines and selected Sheikh’s offices in the Middle East, in some parts of Asia, Europe and America has announced today Maxine Medina, Miss Universe Philippines 2016, as the cover of the magazine’s January 2017 issue.
The magazine’s 4th issue will talk about ‘The Royalties of Traveling’ – an issue dedicated to royal lifestyle, high end travel experiences, fashion and travel photography and inspirational travel stories from the affluent society.
Co-founder and Multi-awarded Editor-in-Chief Josh Mangila said, “Maxine Medina is the epitome of an empowered woman – despite the pressure and challenges of being a beauty queen and a role model to many girls all over the Philippines and the world, she still handles herself with grace and elegance backed with her classy and authentic oriental charm – a true representation of luxury Philippines. This issue is a tribute to my homeland Philippines – we featured the other side of the Philippines – the luxury side of the island. I had a pleasure to work with a great team lead by ace-photographer Raymond Saldana and his team. We shot the editorial at one of the newest luxury property in the heart of the city, Nobu Hotel.”
“In the Middle East, Philippines is not seen as a luxury destination and I want to change that perspective by showing them the glamorous side of the country full with beauty and grandiose. This issue is a game-changer as it will open new perspective for our readers about the Philippines and eventually encourage more Middle Eastern to travel to the Philippines.” Added Josh Mangila, who recently awarded by the European Tourism as the Most Influential Travel Journalist of 2015.
Maxine Medina commented on why does she wants to promote the tourism in the Philippines, “Being able to promote and represent the country in the global arena is a privilege to showcase what the Philippines has to offer. I want everyone to know how rich Filipino culture is. To be able to promote the Philippines gives me the opportunity to show the beauty of our country and our people. I would like to tell everyone about our unique Filipino values. To be raised and born as a Filipina is something that I will always be proud of and I will never trade places with anyone because growing up in my own country has taught me to be strong, responsible and God-loving.”
On Maxine’s editorial feature, the magazine will also showcase the designs and dresses of internationally renowned Filipino designers such as Frederick Peralta, Francis Libiran, Albert Andrada, Edwin Tan, Pepsi Herrera and Ivarlusi Aseron.

Jealisse Andrea Tovar Velásquez is a 23 year-old model from Quibdó, Colombia who graduated college with a degree in Industrial Design and Photographic Image Production at the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Bogotá. She stands 5’10” and is one of the strong pre-arrival picks by many pageant sites for the 65th Miss Universe.

Andrea holds the record for the longest reign of a Miss Colombia – more than sixteen months in total.

“Being a queen is a gift for life. Here your intellect, your spirit and your history are favored. It is also a very important platform and proof of this is that year after year we see how beautiful and intelligent women embark on new professional paths and is an opportunity that is presented to a very few,” commented Andrea on this stage of her life.

Raissa Santana comes from Parana and will represent Brazil in the 65th Miss Universe

Raissa Santana is the second woman of black origin who won the Miss Brazil title after Deise Nunez back in 1986. She is 21 years old, stands 5’10” and is a Marketing major. She comes from Parana but currently residing in Bahia.

Three interesting things that might interest you about Raissa are: 1) she was bullied growing up because of her natural curly hair, 2) she is a full-fledged part of #BeyHive – a group which follows and idolizes singer Beyonce and 3) she is one of five children raised by a single mother.

I’m very emotional. This here is a mixture of great emotions. I didn’t expect to win this title, but I am very happy to have won and to represent black beauty and encourage girls who have the dream of having something, to conquer, to be a model, to be a Miss…now I want to encourage these girls and show them that they can.” said Raissa

From Italy, here comes Sophia Sergio for the 65th Miss Universe

22 year-old Sophia Sergio is Miss Universe Italy 2016, a title she won just last December 18 when she defeated 24 other contenders for the right to represent her country in the 65th Miss Universe next month here in Manila. She stands 6 feet tall and is currently a university student majoring in International Business.

A Fashion Model by profession, she is no newbie in pageantry as well, having joined Miss Italia back in 2011 where she was named Miss Peugeot. This allowed her to tour around the country and expanded her work experience in runway shows and photoshoots.

While considering herself as too sensitive at times, Sophia describes herself as quite the optimist who will always look at the brighter side of things. Deshauna Barber is Miss USA in the 65th Miss Universe

Credentials-wise, Deshauna Barber has a lot of impressive achievements going for her. She is a Commander in the US Army Reserves. She is a former member of the US Armed Forces. She is the only national titleholder crowned while in active military service. And she is Miss USA in the 65th Miss Universe.

This 27 year-old native of the District of Columbia has one very good quality that would make her deserving of the Miss Universe sash – she is quite a good speaker. And we all know how important that qualification is after her NYC roommate Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach has set the bar high for her successor.

Watch Deshauna during her recent TV guesting on the TD Jakes Show

courtesy of TD Jakes

Does she have the big advantage for the crown?

Deshauna on the streets of NYC

Of course, there is more to being articulate than meets the DIC crown (or is it still the DIC crown nowadays?). Deshauna needs to consistently exude the right combination of inner and outer beauty to sustain the big strides Miss Universe has gained the past year. She has the advantage alright, with her regular presence in the Miss Universe Organization offices and sleeping with the reigning Miss Universe under one roof.

But what are your thoughts about Deshauna, dear readers? Do you think that she has already made serious inroads for the title as early as several months back when she won Miss USA 2016?

Watch a video of her Holiday greetings now.
