Punika before leaving for Manila last week

The last time a Southeast Asian won Miss Earth was way back in 2008 when our very own Karla Henry brought the house down in Pampanga and became the first Filipina to be proclaimed as such in the homegrown beauty pageant. Five years have passed since. Is this the right year and time to have another candidate from the region top the environmental competition? Well, the prospects are looking good, especially that the host delegate Angelee de los Reyes and Miss Earth Thailand Punika Kunsuntornrat are fast becoming early favorites to wrest the title from Tereza Fajksova.

In particular, the Thai representative is always glowing in all her appearances and looks to become Asia’s best bet for a win in 2013. The tall and gracious 20 year-old lady from Prachuap Khiri Khan has also charmed the locals in more ways than one. Ever-smiling and naturally amicable, she has convinced pageant pundits of her strong chances of snatching the title.

I hope the stars align in her favor so that Polly (her nickname) can do a Molly*. ;-)

*- Molly is the nickname of MU2013 Gabriela Isler.
