There is always something to be said about being runners-up in the annual Binibining Pilipinas. For starters, they train with the crowned winners, attend personal appearances and constantly wear the sash stating their rightful placements in the magic circle. And all of this without the guarantee of getting the chance to represent the Philippines abroad. What then is the source of interest to sustain the drive and discipline to measure up to the titleholders without the clarity of anything in exchange?
It’s the prestige. The pride of being one of the best in the country’s premier national beauty pageant. Never mind if they always get tagged with the most generic-sounding honor. The mere fact that they belong to the fringes of the creme de la creme should be reason enough to still project themselves as winners. And who knows? If they eventually prove to be good soldiers at BPCI, Madame Stella Marquez de Araneta just might take a shine on one or both and find a respectable international competition to field them in.
Such is the case with Laura Victoria Lehmann and Hannah Ruth Sison – 1st and 2nd Runners-Up in Bb. Pilipinas 2014, respectively. The waiting can be excruciatingly long, but ultimately satisfying if bright and promising opportunities would come along. The prospects haven’t really happened that much in the past. But with the resurgence of belief in the world-class quality of the Filipina, I have a strange feeling something interesting might just be served on their plates in the mid-term. Let’s see. ;-)
