During the National Costume Competition of Miss Tourism Philippines 2015 held in Nayong Pilipino Clark last Monday, the candidates were presented in a wide assortment of traditional attires that went from simple and more authentic numbers to eye-catchingly big/space-eating garbs that will definitely leave the observer impressed or otherwise.

Imagination can really run wild when the inventive (whimsical, if you will) designer is given a lot more than free hand to come up with their interpretations of the National Costume. And you can’t blame some of them for pushing the envelope to insure that their entries outshine the rest.

And this leads me to the question: would you rather see our pageant representatives get dressed in over-the-top National Costumes that will surely catch the attention of everyone or get fitted for the more elegant and stage-friendly creations that will give them less restrictions in moving around while displaying the same?

Truthfully, I would rather see our Queens in the most authentic NatCos. It doesn’t matter if the impact is less. After all, a trained creative eye can always spot the ones that look fabulous but not necessarily going for broke in terms of shock value.

In more recent years, I have given my two thumbs up to what Janine Tugonon wore during Miss Universe 2012 in Las Vegas. How about you, dear readers? On which side are you on? :-)
