Throwback Thursday: The Old Glory of Miss Universe 1981

Time was when the old grandeur of Miss Universe was something that kept watchers glued to the small screen every year. The annual beauty extravaganza, stripped of all the modern changes that have been applied to the editions for the past decade and a half, will always come across as the beautiful memories of time gone by. Of course, our favorite beauty pageant is now a business. And with that comes the shorter airtime, tighter segments and often-modified selection process.

Let’s do a throwback on the Broadway-hosted Miss Universe 1981 and watch the Opening Number, Parade of Nations and Musical Number where the Philippine representative was Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1981 Maricar Mendoza. The singing of “New York, New York” made it all the more special and the guesting of Peter Allen plus the cast of 42nd Street was a most welcome change.
