The news article by Robert Requintina posted on the Manila Bulletin website stating the possibility of Miss Universe being held in Manila next year.
This is the kind of news item that can easily excite local pageant fans. And with the website of Manila Bulletin running the item, it certainly gives some added air of credibility to the content. But just what are the real chances of Donald Trump making an announcement that the beauty pageant will return to our shores after more than two decades of waiting? And will something like this augur well for the country’s wish of getting a 3rd Miss Universe crown come December? To the fans and supporters of Miss Universe Philippines 2014 MJ Lastimosa, it will most likely be interpreted as such. But for the more business-minded among us, it will simply be a venture that would be awarded to the country most enthusiastic in supporting and financing such event. Regardless of the return of investment, that is.

In the end – and I will sound like a broken record here – the more important thing to remember is that hosting Miss Universe is and will almost always be a risky proposition. It will definitely win the support of all pageant fans. But – given the endless problems and controversies with the DAP and PDAF being experienced by President Noynoy and his cabinet – I doubt if the Government will even commit to an allocation of funds.
So to all local Miss Universe supporters out there, can we see a show of hands if you feel that the Philippines is financially capable of hosting Donald Trump’s pageant next year? ;-)
